We are trans and queer supporters of #NoCopAcademy, and we are calling out the racist policies that gay aldermen like James Cappleman, Deb Mell, and Ray Lopez have regularly supported. We are TIRED of seeing our sacred identities misused by those in power to justify the displacement, deportation, and incarceration of our communities, and we won’t allow it any more!
Gay alderman LOVE to point to their identities as some kind of proof of their progressive credibility, but we call BULLSHIT. From Cappleman’s eviction of trans residents from Tent City to Deb Mell’s courting of developers while undermining affordable housing; to Lopez accepting donations from private detention centers while remaining silent on deportations in his own ward. As queer and trans residents of this city, many of us Black and brown, and we understand the ways that criminalization & housing insecurity are some of the biggest threats to queer life & livelihood. We’re not going to let these aldermen use their gay identities as cover for their harmful practices in office.
Cappleman is chair of the Zoning Committee, which both Mell and Lopez sit on as well. We DEMAND all three of these alderman listen to the voices of Black, Brown, immigrant, undocumented, trans, and queer residents, and CANCEL THE VOTE on the Cop Academy zoning changes at this Thursday’s Zoning committee meeting!
Stop hiding behind your gayness! “Progressive” is not an identity, it’s a commitment to action! Trans and queer people say #NoCopAcademy!
*PS you’ll notice Carlos Rosa isn’t on this list because that queer muffin has actually fought to expand affordable housing in his ward, condemned criminalization and the CPD gang database, and taken risks to end police violence by voting against the Cop Academy. Keep it up qt. He's also not on the Zoning Committee.
*PPS Tunney don't think we forgot about you. You just weren't on the dirty dozen list *yet.* But we saw you vote for the Cop Academy on the Plan Commission last week and we know you're on Zoning Committee too.
